“Seeds & Bones” is about what we choose to carry with us and what we choose to let go. Bones can carry our stories, but they can also weigh us down with expectation and history. Seeds are the future, but we also have to be careful about what we plant, and what our legacy for the next generation will be. We can’t have one without the other - past and future, hope and regret, birth and death, dreams and darkness. The gothic imagery of desert, birds and bones is brought to life in the song by slide guitar, moody percussion and just enough rhythm to carry us forward.
lyrics
Seeds & Bones
Verse
The cry of the hawk, and the morning dove
The redwing blackbird, all singing for love
They mark their land, catch their prey
Feed their babies, for another day
I can feel that free, here on the ground
If I release, this burden to which I’m bound
Chorus
My seeds and bones, seeds and bones
What do we carry with us, what do we bury on the road
Seeds and bones, seeds and bones
What do we carry, what do we bury on the road
Verse
What do we gather, when we’re called to leave
Flames of disaster, licking at our heels
Should I take my anger, my righteous need
All overgrown with my belief
Is there room for the promise that I must keep
I may not see the harvest, but my children will reap
Chorus
My seeds and bones, seeds and bones
What do we carry with us, what do we bury on the road
Spoken Word
I picked a fruit that was offered me
I ate it whole and kept the seeds
To scatter with me when I leave
To see what sticks and what wants to be
In fertile soil or blown by desert wind
We find the place we can start again
All I carry is in the palm of my hand
These seeds of hope for another land
Chorus
My seeds and bones, seeds and bones
What do we carry with us, what do we bury on the road
Seeds and bones, seeds and bones
What do we carry, what do we bury on the road
